In 1999, Anna and Don Preston bought a home in Englewood, CO but temporarily needed to live in one of the local motels along South Broadway over the holidays. It didn’t take long to realize most of the other motel residents were far less fortunate, often times living just one misfortune away from being homeless. The kids were the hardest part for Don and Anna and they were determined to somehow make a difference.
Christmas was never easy for Don as a child and the chance to be Santa for those families emerged a few years later. Today, the couple has returned to the motels and temporary homes with gifts and food for the past ten years.
Every year, they are contracted to be the official Santa and the Mrs. for private events, and all the fees they receive are used their Christmas Eve gift-giving project. Their efforts were recognized by the local ABC affiliate, KMGH and they were featured on the evening news as “Channel 7’s Everyday Heroes.” (Click here to watch) Yet there is an army of elves behind them, both with donations of time and treasure. From the high rises in Denver to the neighbor across the street, their special persona and commitment to the families have touched everyone involved.
